The creative functions of the mind and thought have been used to invent invigorating art forms from t he Pop Art of Andy Warhol to the abstract cubist paintings of Pablo Picasso and the graphic simple designs of Keith Haring. All of these great artist created a style of art that remains original and alive, this is the promising outlook of the multi-faceted art of internationally renowned South American born fine artist/designer, Jon Planas. Planas who lives and works out his downtown art studio located in Gallery Ro w, a section that is fast becoming the heart of contemporary art in downtown,Los Angeles. Galleries like Pharmaka and Bert Green Fine Art host bi-weekly art openings in this very active, buzzing contemporary art market . That is exactly what attracted Mr. Planas' interest in choosing the avant-garde area for his, Classic Planas an art showing at the popular bistro, The Metropol Cafe, a restaurant/ art-gallery that also offers live music on weekends. Andy Warhol and Keith Haring began their careers in NYC and so did Planas who became a darling of the downtown NY art world after the NY Times Style pages featured a career defining article that propelled the young artist in to worldwide recognition. Self described as the original jacket painter, Planas was inducted into a celebrity that opened the red ropes of the ultra chick Studio 54 and Limelight discothèque where he first showcased his collections of wearable art. Looking at Planas’ career from a social perspective he is instantly evident and recognizable for his Absolut Vodka advertising contributions as in the20r esult of his landmark and grandest work to date, a 60’x40’, 3 dimensional outdoor spectacular billboard titled, Absolut City, that stood for 3 years at the entrance of West Hollywood on famous Sunset strip. The idea that while one could drink Absolut and be instantly connected to great art landed the famous brand a place ion advertising historty wich was locally associated with the art of Planas who was referred by his friends and local press as, Absolut Jon. At the same time, Jon Planas was developing his touch on what has become a diverse collection of artworks collected by many of Hollywood’s top stars such as Robin Williams, Leonardo Di Caprio ,Joan Agajanian Quin, Cher and Cyndi Lauper. Planas' art touches on the intricate embellishment of empty spirit bottles, evening jackets, storm windows and other found objects that are transformed by the fine artist into brilliant artworks. Following a Buddhist philosophy in mind, Planas believes that in the reincarnation of the objects and that what is old can be new and vibrant again and again. This is the case with the Classic Planas art exhibition which will showcase a freshly painted collection of one of a kind evening jackets and some other paintings and recent pencil drawings all on found objects Planas who is now 42 is just so grateful to be able to put this show together since a tragic fire destroyed his art studio almost claiming his own life in 2004. "I am so blessed it really is just amazing that I am still around it was a close call but nonetheless I survived and now back in the creative world with a colorful and unique collection of new artwork!"." It seems like just yesterday that I remember that it was 1984 and was attending Pratt Institute in NYC and I so desperately wanted to get into Studio 54 so I threw some acrylic paint, some glitter and some diamond dust on my Armani Tuxedo and voila I had a great original look which got me right into the party of the century". Through his fine art studies Planas tends to identify with the deconstruction of the figurative and some his paintings do have a latin american Picassoesque style that yet cries out with a very distinct modern urban edge that has graffiti and art- deco influences. Planas looks at the notion of identity and the fluidity of the concept of identity though fashion, he feels that his interaction and environment changed as he wore different themed painted jackets sometimes he was a Pharaoh King other times he was a Statue of Liberty with a tear and other times he become the Cosmic Cat, and of course Andy Warhol's encouragement was given at the right time and place that fundamentally opened the doors for the jackets to be featured on Interview magazine and to land Planas on MTV News. “Andy loved my jackets and window paintings because he said that artists paint on canvas yet you Jon paint on jackets and windows“. Planas takes his artworks and jackets to the Metropol Cafe in a state of the art extravaganza in celebration of his birthday and recent move to downtown Los Angeles.
