May 15, 2009 - PRLog -- Back in the fall of 2008, the adult and community education program at Jupiter High School in Florida added the book, “How to Get, Keep and Be Well Paid in a Job” (Outskirts Press, ISBN: 9781432725297) to teach job skills to advanced ESOL students.  The book replaced existing resources used to teach topics such as job interview skills, workplace skills, safety in the workplace, how to get along with supervisors, ethics in the workplace, and more.

The book has been a tremendous success.  When asked about the effectiveness of the book, instructor, Jerry Saperstein said, “Not only is the book written in a clear, concise, easy to read and comprehend format, it covers a subject area that my students desperately need in preparing to enter the workforce.  The book is like a manual in which students learn how to seek employment, perform to the highest levels of their abilities at their places of employment, and learn methods for working and communicating with their supervisors on the job.  I have found no other book that explains and provides these learned skills!  Our students have benefited greatly by the methods and techniques presented in the book.”

The book was written by Jay Goldberg, who as a consultant to the Workforce Development Board of the Treasure Coast (Florida) developed a work readiness certification program called the best in the U.S. by the National Skills Standard Board in January of 2003.

In July, 2008, the book received a five star review from the Midwest Book Review, an entity that makes recommendations for library systems.  The review concluded that the book “is highly recommended for community library career collections.”

While most work readiness books contain information solely about how to act on a job, “How to Get, Keep, and Be Well Paid in a Job” also includes why specific workplace behaviors and skills are important to employers, and contains comparisons to everyday life to help illustrate key points.  For example, the book compares job interviewing to dating; obtaining advanced workplace skills to securing special codes in video games; looks at ethics using music downloads, and much more.
