Fire managers predict busy wildfire season in West

May 6, 2009, San Diego, CA – The National Interagency Fire Center, headquartered in Boise, ID, released a 2009 Wildland Fire Outlook that predicts, as a result of California’s continuing drought and low snowpack, 2009 will be a very active wildfire season. The report says that Southern California will see increasing significant fire potential during June through August.

Ron Reitz, President of  Quality Claims Management Corporation, www.qualityclaims.com, recommends that homeowners and residents in San Diego, as well as throughout Southern California, start preparing now.

In addition to cutting back brush and making your homes and properties more fire resistant, you can also take additional steps. The first thing to do is to make sure that they have enough of the right kind of fire insurance.

“After a disaster, people often discover that their insurance coverage does not cover their losses,” said Ron. “By that time, it is too late. Unless you ask, and know what to ask for, you may not be have the right amount or the right types of insurance you need to cover your home, possessions, collections and other items. For example, homeowners should have Replacement Cost Coverage. This coverage will pay the actual cost to replace an insured’s property.”

It is also important to know what you own and to have an updated home inventory list.

“Most people do not know what they really own and how much it will cost to replace their possessions – their clothing, furniture, jewelry, antiques, art, electronics, etc,” warns Ron. “It makes sense every year to pull out your video camcorder and go around your house, your garage, attic, and out buildings, to make a video of what your family owns so that if there is a disaster, you will have a record. As you walk around with your camcorder, you can also document how much the item cost, when you bought it, and what is its worth or what it will cost you to replace it.

To help out, Quality Claim Management provides free guides that help homeowners, renters and business owners to determine if they indeed have enough insurance. They also provide free downloadable Home Inventory checklists and forms.
