Christian Illustrator Clint DeRon Johnson Transforms Gospel Script God’s Money into Graphic Novel

Perseverance Pictures partners Kevin Norwood and Lovelace Lee III decide to have their soul-winning gospel script GOD'S MONEY transformed into a graphic novel

April 29, 2009 - PRLog -- LOS ANGELES—In a bold move actor-writer Kevin Norwood and writer-producer Lovelace Lee III of Perseverance Pictures have hired Christian illustrator Clint DeRon Johnson to transform their gospel script GOD’S MONEY—into a graphic novel. GOD’S MONEY is an urban drama about a petty career criminal named Prince DeRon Mulgrew. He’s released from prison for a second time and stoops to a new low—and robs a church of its offering. Prince fails to understand that his folly is God’s opportunity. Prince is sent back to prison—but this time as a saved man and a soul-saving ambassador for Jesus Christ.
“We wanted the power of GOD’S MONEY to go wherever the Lord allowed,” said Lee. This is the first script that he and writing partner Norwood have ever done that glorifies God. “We’ve had fun writing several scripts together,” said Norwood. “This is the first one we’ve written to glorify God.” More and more films are made from popular graphic novels. And sometimes, scripts and films are turned into graphic novels, too.
Once Norwood and Lee had decided to have their script transformed into a graphic novel only one person came to mind: Clint DeRon Johnson. “Clint is a masterful Christian illustrator,” said Norwood. Lee points out that Johnson does work other than Christian themes, but never anything vulgar. “Clint is a class act and that’s what I respect most about him. He uses his talent to glorify the God who gave him the talent.” And Johnson has a body of work that spans 25 years. He’s also the creator of the Christian superhero character known as Faith Walker™. Johnson was the only choice
but his schedule was so full that Norwood and Lee had to wait for him to read the script. And waiting for people to read your work is never easy.
“We waited a long time to hear from Clint,” Norwood added. Finally, their wait paid off. “I got a call from Clint while I was in Chicago a couple of weeks ago and he was talking a mile a minute,” Lee said. At first, Lee had no idea what Johnson was talking about. He’d never heard his friend so animated before. Although Johnson was only halfway through the script, he had seen the vision presented by the writers. “Wow! I was sold after reading the first 15 pages,” Johnson said. “GOD’S MONEY depicts a powerful move of God that needs to be experienced by the world.” A few days later Johnson submitted a stunning cover sketch done in pencil.
“The sketch Clint gave us made Kevin do back flips,” Lee remembers. “He got it! Clint really captured Prince’s smugness,” Norwood noted. The men were more than pleased. “Anything Clint touches is blessed,” Lee said. “And it’s a plus that he’s the finest illustrator I know, too.” Johnson will deliver a full-color cover to be used in presentations to potential investors.
“If the Lord says so, we’ll use Clint’s wonderful art to share our concept for God’s Money as a graphic novel that will touch the world for Jesus,” Lee said. Once the project is fully funded, Johnson is the illustrator they plan to use. Lee understands that the economy is tight. “The reality is that everything belongs to God Almighty. Our jobs are to be the stewards He would have us to be,” Lee said. Lee’s presented the idea of the God’s Money graphic novel to a leading Black Christian Church denomination and even a major Christian publisher. “We’d love to have them partner with us in this soul-winning publication,” Lee added. He contends that whatever happens, the project is in God’s hands. “God provides where He guides and we’ll follow His lead.”
