| Dancer Joey Dowling speaks to JigTV About Auditioning, Diversity in Dance Style, Being on BroadwayDancer Joey Dowling speaks to JigTV About Auditioning, Diversity in Dance Style, Being on Broadway, and Having a Good Attitude
By: JigTV.com, LLC. Joey sat down with JigTV for a dancer interview where she was able to provide a lot of insight to aspiring dancers. She tells the online dance community to be aware in their auditions if they want to nail them. As important as it is to learn the steps quickly and do them well it is also important to dress the part for what you are auditioning for. It is also important to do research on what the show is about, the director, the choreographer, their styles. Lastly it is important to be confident, knowing that she is one of 500 people auditioning for one part invigorates Joey. It is key to be aware of who the director is watching and figuring out what that dancer is doing to get the director's attention. Another thing that has helped Joey Dowling to become so successful is how diverse her background is. She insists a lot of aspiring dancers focus too much on doing one style or one thing. Even that one thing may take a lot of background training. Joey wanted not only to do videos, but to do a world tour, do Broadway, film and TV, and salsa, contemporary. Though she admits that some things were luck, she reminds the online dance community that it takes a lot of hard work to be successful. Being on Broadway is more than just auditioning and getting the part. Even when they get the part, master choreographers still have a lot of hard work to do. If you don't work your butt off to stay in shape you will get hurt. Everything about Broadway is hard on the body. There is also a lot of vocal work that needs to be done to get these parts. Even if you are the best dancer, if you can't sing then you won't get cast. Another aspect of Broadway is the negativity that comes around with it. If you allow a bad review or negative feedback to get under your skin then your career on Broadway will be short. Instead when someone yells at Joey she took it as a compliment because she takes it as them wanting her to get better. If you really love what you are doing then it is a lot easier to get through it.
