Follow on Google News | SAVE OUR POST – The Davison, Michigan VFW Fights to Stay OpenVFW Post 4087 may have to shut its doors for good. The Post has barely been making it off spaghetti dinners and pastie sales. Learn how you can help today.
By: Annie Blanco Media Services LLC "We're just treading water,” Carol Worvie, a member of the post’s ladies auxiliary, said at a recent fundraiser. But in one last effort to stay afloat members of Post 4087 have launched the “Save Our Post” campaign. “We’re not the only fraternal organization around that is having a tough time, but the perfect scenario would be just to get the word out,” so says Post Treasurer John Church. Church says the Davison Post is the largest in the state of Michigan with over 650 life members. The Post has asked for more donations from within, but so far the donations have not been enough. To survive thus far the Post has been renting out their hall for wedding parties and sponsoring pastie sales, spaghetti dinners, and Texas Hold ‘Em poker tournaments. Post member have even got creative lately, holding weekly Karaoke nights. "We've had fundraiser, after fundraiser, after fundraiser," For the past couple of years Post 4087 has seen some tough times. The Post got into a predicament in 2004 when they built their new building. After that, a land sale snafu put the post behind in its payments. Since then it’s been one mishap after the next. With a hefty mortgage and an ongoing legal dispute the Post got behind in the bills. Now the Post has just enough in the bank to pay a couple of months worth of bills. After that, if they don’t get more money quick the Post will lose their property and close their doors. That means the military veterans who are now making their way home will have no Post go to. “Over the past two years we’ve been getting a new generation of veterans joining. We’ve got guys coming back with massive brain trauma, loss of limbs, and with depression. They are veterans who served in Somalia, Desert Storm, Honduras, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. We want to have a Post for them to come home to,” Church said. What extra money the Post has had over the years has gone to local Boy Scout clubs, various Cancer societies, and to holding military funerals and receptions.
