Archaeologist’s Son Enveloped in Chinese Mystery
New Novel for Young Readers Follows Boy’s Adventure during Chinese Excavation
Bloomington, IN (March 5, 2009) – When Young Explorer magazine hires 13-year-old Ethan Sparks to photograph his journey to China, he gets even more excited about accompanying his father on the trip. His dad is an archaeologist whose work gets wrapped up in shady dealings in the Far East in Nick Barry’s new novel for young adults, Escape of the Terra-Cotta Soldiers: An Ethan Sparks Adventure (published by iUniverse).

Ethan, notorious among his teachers for being a troublemaker, joins his father on this important dig in China. Dr. Ian Sparks is excavating a Chinese terra-cotta slider artifact, and Ethan looks for ways to keep his article exciting. But instead of making his own trouble, plenty of it manages to come his way.

A sniper tries to assassinate his father. A bizarre man with bloody tear ducts enters the picture and has a strange ability to control others. An international conspiracy brews; double agents switch sides so often that Ethan teams up with his friend, Chen Jun, to solve the mystery. With these weird events and Ethan’s own knack for causing a stir, he gets himself and his father into more trouble than he can imagine.

A fast-paced novel for young readers, Escape of the Terra-Cotta Soldiers: An Ethan Sparks Adventure is the first of three books in this series. Barry’s casual but exciting writing style makes this thriller a captivating book, and young readers will be enthralled with the vivid descriptions of the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square and the museum that houses the famous terra-cotta soldiers. Barry also weaves a heartfelt sub-plot about a father and son growing closer together.

Nick Barry first became fascinated with China’s terra-cotta soldiers while working in China teaching Chinese chefs how to prepare classic American dishes. He later began a career as a teacher primarily assisting physically disabled students. He lives in North Carolina with his wife, Jenn.
