Accident prone Brits cause DIY disasters

The Easter break is a traditional DIY and gardening weekend, but for many of us what starts as a simple project can end in an SOS call for professional help.

March 30, 2009 - PRLog -- Nationwide research commissioned by online insurance provider, Protectyourbubble.com, reveals that just over one third of us have had a DIY disaster within the home and nearly one in four of us have had to make an SOS call to a professional to fix the problem.

Home improvement tops the bill in our list of disasters with 22% of us admitting to a catastrophe such as drilling through pipes or wires or inadvertently knocking a hole through a wall. Hot on its heels came plumbing and electrical calamities, however the research revealed that we are far more likely to call out a professional to sort out the water works and wiring than we are for home improvement. Almost half of those questioned said they would call out an emergency plumber or electrician, while only a third said they would get a professional to fix a home improvement problem.

Stephen Ebbett from Protectyourbubble.com says: “As the credit crunch bites deeper, more people are doing up their homes rather than selling up – and they’re more inclined to do it themselves to save money. This can be a false economy if things do go wrong, particularly if they do have to call out a professional to right their wrongs and especially over a bank holiday. Assuming they can find one, it’s likely that they’ll be charged a premium by any tradesman over a holiday weekend just to set foot inside their door let alone fix the problem.

“A home emergency policy is the best way to ensure that they don’t have to pay over the odds as well as being sure of getting emergency help. For just a few pounds a month, people are guaranteed rapid response repairs carried out by experts. It’s worth considering buying a policy before forking out £100 on a new Bosch hammer drill!”
