Simple Communication with IRS Can Help Prevent Tax Liens

Reports suggest a turbulent 2009 tax season and more taxpayers to receive tax liens. However, simple communication with the IRS can prevent problems from happening.

March 18, 2009 - PRLog -- The 2009 tax season is unfortunately proving itself to be a memorable one for many Americans struggling in debt. Millions of people have been laid-off of their jobs, and the numbers are still expected to rise for awhile. The housing market is still unstable as many homeowners do whatever they can to survive and avoid becoming a victim in the ever-growing foreclosure crisis. And the credit crunch steadily adds more stress to financially strapped Americans.

Paying taxes, for some Americans, are the last thing that they want to deal with. However, paying taxes is mandatory. Unfortunately, reports are counting on a decrease in the number people filing their taxes this year, along with more reports of tax audits from the IRS. In consequence, this is most likely to lead to more reports of tax liens, notice of levies, or other IRS procedures which would not only devastate a taxpayer’s credit score, but it will be a negative contribution to the credit crisis and the recession.

What taxpayers should do is pay their taxes on time, and if they are suffering financially, they should contact the IRS to search out options. If they need help with debt overall, they should seek professional help from a debt management counselor or credit counseling service. If absolutely necessary, bankruptcy would also be an option for them. As long as taxpayers communicate with the IRS about any changes in income or seek out help in organizing their finances, they should be able to pay their debts and save in the process.
