Netforlife.org: Cast a Bed Net, Save a Life

Feb. 6, 2009 - PRLog -- African children go to sleep every night dreaming that they will not become one of the 1.5 million people that die from malaria every year. Mosquitoes are the leading carrier of this deadly disease that runs rampant in Africa. www.NetforLife.org was established by the World Bible Society to help combat this deadly disease by reducing the exposure to contaminated mosquitoes at night.

Because many African homes have no windows or doors, and because mosquitoes are especially active during the night, this leaves African children extremely susceptible while they sleep. Through the use of an anti-mosquito bed net, those sleeping under its cast have a significantly reduced risk of transmission and possess hope for a healthier tomorrow.

The NetforLife.org campaign encourages individuals to donate $10 for the purchase and distribution of an anti-malaria bed net.  Less than three cents a day purchases an insecticide treated net that will greatly reduce a child’s risk of contracting malaria, potentially saving a life.

Solely based upon place of birth, the odds of an African child’s survival from malaria are not favorable.  During the first three months of a child’s life, the exposure rate increases from 0-10% and then to 80% - 90% by the time a child turns one. There are some lucky children who survive malaria in these high risk areas but they never really escape its destructive effects.  Children can experience recurring episodes of fever and anemia for many years after exposure. These side effects usually damage their physical and mental development and inhibit them from becoming a healthy and productive adult.

Every 30 seconds, a child’s life is claimed by malaria. For the price of a movie ticket, a couple of cups of coffee or a lunch, you can give a child the gift of life. Cover a child, cover a community, cover a continent.
