By: Michelle Clavijo-Diaz Faith-based tours, which combine volunteer travel with sightseeing for spiritual travelers, continue to grow in popularity, even in this rocky economy. According to a landmark study by the Menlo Consulting Group, faith-based international travel is expected to double by 2012 from 4.5M to 9.7M travelers. In a recent U.S. Travel Association survey, one-quarter (25%) of travelers expressed interest in taking a spiritual vacation. More than one in ten (12%) said they were currently more interested in such a trip than they were five years ago. The appeal of a faith-based vacation spans across the generations. Approximately one-third of each age group surveyed (18 – 34 years old, 35 – 54 years old and 55+) expressed interest in such travel. Lifetree Adventures is leveraging the ageless appeal of faith-based tourism with two family-oriented Christian trips to Mexico and Alaska in 2009. The eight-day Mazatlan family tour has participants spending three days building a house for a local family before heading to a working dude ranch for the day to do some horseback riding. There will also be plenty of time to enjoy the surf and sand of the warm Mexican coast with snorkeling, whale and dolphin watching, and kayaking. Trip bookings are available in March, June, and Christmas Break, 2009. Cost is US$1499 per adult /US$750 per child (Age 7-12) for the summer trips, and $1599 per adult/$8500 per child for December. Pricing includes 3-4 star accommodations at an all-inclusive resort. The 9-day Alaska family tour includes a 3 1/2-day service assignment at a national youth camp in the suburbs outside of Anchorage. Service opportunities will be onsite and helping with projects in the local community. Guests will also hike to a glacier in Alyeska, visit a wildlife preserve, and engage in active pursuits including horseback riding and boating on the camp’s lake. This trip is scheduled for July 18-26, 2009. Cost is US $1450 per adult/US$450 per child (age 7-17) and includes 3-4 star accommodations and many meals.
