There are so many places, famous buildings and charming streets in East-Berlin, which had a great importance in the past of Germany and which are popular points for all visitors and residents likewise – by day and by night. Berlin lives. One of the most German sights is the Brandenburg Gate, this stood directly at the former border to West-Berlin and could not be passed from both sides. Today people are allowed to promenade again through the Brandenburg Gate between the Tiergarten (West-Berlin) and one of the most famous streets in East Berlin, which is called “Unter den Linden”. The course of the former Berlin Wall near the Brandenburg Gate is labelled on the ground, so that visitors may have an impression of this Wall, which divided Germany und Berlin for more than 28 years. There exist still parts of the Berlin Wall, which can be visited in the Bernauer Straße, where a wall memorial was created, and in the Mühlenstraße, where the popular East-Side-Gallery can be viewed.

Come to East Berlin! A lot of magnetic points are waiting for visits. The Alexanderplatz (Alexander Place) with his “Fernsehturm” (TV tower) and the “Weltzeituhr” (World-Time-Watch) and the place, where the former “Palast der Republik” (Palace of the Republic) was standing. This palace was called “Erich’s Lighthouse” and “Light Palace” because of its many lights. But who was Erich? Erich Honnecker was the name of the famous president of the former German Democratic Republic. The “Palast der Republik” was pulled down in November 2008. For some people the destruction of the building seemed to be “necessary”, others spoke from a “shame”. Today only a great place nearby the imposing Berlin Dome and the River Spree remember in the glory time of the German Democratic Republic. At this place will be rebuilt the old “Berliner Stadtschloss” (Berlin Town Castle), that was destroyed by the communists in 1950, only a few years after the Second World War.
