What became of Michael?

O’Farrell’s latest novel tells the story of the youngest of Norah’s Children

Bloomington, IN (December 19, 2008): In Michael, author Ann O’Farrell answers the question on the lips of everyone that read her debut novel, Norah’s Children, “Where’s Michael?”

Michael, the youngest son of Norah and Brendan Kelly, has lost all contact with his family long before the conclusion of Norah’s Children. What happened to him after the family was scattered? Does he remember, or even know about them?

In this sequel, O’Farrell takes readers back to the beginning of Michael‘s time in England, when Jim Porter decides to leave young Michael in the care of his spinster sister, Wyn, as an insurance for her old age. Though reluctant to take him in, she is happy to take the money that her brother gives her for his care. As she rears the small boy her words and ways are harsh, but is there any love for the lonely child?

Over time Michael forgets about his parents, his family and Ireland. O’Farrell beautifully weaves family letters throughout her novels but Michael is kept from receiving those from his oldest sister, Mary. The younger sister, Sheelagh, tries to discover why.

“Mary says she writes to you, but you never write back,” she said tentatively.
“I never got any letters.”
“Why not?”
“I don’t know, do I?”
“She thought you just didn’t care.”
Michael sat quietly toying with one of the jigsaw pieces. He looked across at his sister. “Why wouldn’t I care? Of course I’d care.”
“Why don’t you ask Aunty Wyn about them now, when you go home?”
He nodded, but his thoughts were elsewhere. Was his sister telling the truth?  … But then, why on earth would his sister lie to him?

Once Michael learns about the letters his life begins to change. But what is in his future? Will the old lady, or his family, finally win his loyalty and his affection?

“O’Farrell’s sensitive treatment makes Michael compelling... She has a keen sense of place and social milieu that sharpens her observations of the characters’ psychological conflicts...A rich, moving exploration of the meaning of family, in all its guises.” —Kirkus Discoveries Reviews
