Dec. 4, 2008 - PRLog -- The deadline to register for the 2009 MATHCOUNTS ® Competition Program is drawing near: December 12.  There is still time for middle schools across the country to enroll at www.mathcounts.org to become part of the exciting race to win the national math bee held on May 8, 2009 in Orlando, Florida.  One MATHCOUNTS Club coach and four students will win an all-expenses paid trip to watch the 2009 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando.

In these challenging economic times, it is more important than ever for educators to take advantage of the free quality materials offered by MATHCOUNTS.  Schools that register will receive a School Competition kit including a competition booklet, participation ribbons and certificates for their students.

MATHCOUNTS® is a national math enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement in every U.S. state and territory, and is one of the most successful education partnerships involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors and students in America.  As statistics and studies reveal, U.S. students are seriously falling behind in the study of mathematics, and it’s vital to build these skills in order to be competitive personally, and in the global economy now and in the future.  MATHCOUNTS addresses this issue by showing kids that math can be as fun and challenging as any school sport.

Approximately 100,000 students from more than 6,000 schools participate in the Competition Program at the school level, with the final 228 going on to the national competition to vie for the top spot and become the winning Mathlete ®.

The highly regarded MATHCOUNTS Club Program, which launched last year in celebration of MATHCOUNTS 25th Anniversary is also available to middle schools and is in great demand.  The Club Program is designed specifically to extend the foundation’s efforts to students and schools who do not wish to participate in a math competition with other schools, but want to encourage group activities and collaborative learning to develop students’ mathematical abilities. Schools that sign up will receive a Club in a Box kit in the mail containing the Club Resource Guide, a special MATHCOUNTS activity, pencils for students, a magnet for coaches and Volume II of the MATHCOUNTS School Handbook.
