UniBul Merchant Services Launches New ECommerce Risk Management Guide

Nov. 7, 2008 - PRLog -- Boston, MA, – UniBul Merchant Services announced today the launch of its new guide titled ECommerce Risk Management Guide.  The Guide was developed to help web-based merchants understand the risks associated with doing business online and implement the right policies and procedures to minimize the potential losses from fraudulent transactions and chargebacks.

The Guide begins with a list of fourteen steps for managing eCommerce risk.  The list includes the most important procedures for managing risk in eCommerce transactions.  Each step is further explained in greater detail later in the Guide.  The authors have dedicated a chapter to each of these core risk management procedures.

First on the list and in importance is that online merchants fully understand how an eCommerce transaction is processed, who is involved in it and where the risks are for potential fraud or a customer dispute.  It is important, the authors argue, that every staff member has a complete understanding of eCommerce security issues and fraud risks, understands the chargeback rules in regards to online transactions and is capable of implementing the merchant’s risk management policies.

The next chapter of the Guide provides a comprehensive list of the most typical eCommerce risks.  Following is a chapter in which the authors give their advice on what merchants should look for when evaluating a potential merchant services provider.  Included is also a list of requirements that payment processors request that applicants comply with when applying for a merchant account.

A special attention is given to the content of the policies that need to be prominently displayed on every eCommerce website.  These policies list the measures that merchants take to protect their customers’ personal information and the security of the storage and transmission of data.  The authors also give advice on the concrete details that must be provided in the shipping, billing, credit, and refund policies.

The second part of the Guide provides step-by-step instructions on implementing various risk management procedures, such as required payment form fields, avoiding duplicate orders, card data and cardholder validation, screening high-risk international addresses, maintaining an internal negative file, processing AVS requests, fraud screening and scoring, transaction qualification guidelines, etc.
