Oct. 20, 2008 - PRLog -- “How can I convince our school’s management that exposed bookshelves distract my students?” was a question posed by a teacher of special-needs students. “Clutter, as well as the color red, can affect a student’s focus and attention. That’s Feng Shui … our reaction to the environment,” Garber said.

Diana Garber was contracted to facilitate a workshop on Classroom Feng Shui for the Ohio Education Association (OEA) held October 17. The session’s topics ranged from school buildings; to entrances; classroom set up; technology, student and teacher interaction; trends; and even community support (funding). “Schools that incorporate Feng Shui are mitigating risk, will see measurable results, and therefore will be most desirable. Anyone can benefit regardless of culture or economic indices.” Garber stated. Similar to work she’s done with businesses and libraries, Ms. Garber promotes a more productive and dynamic learning environment.

Feng Shui involves more than decorating and where doors are. Even though every project is customized in classic Feng Shui, there are some universal principles. For example, clutter distracts and inhibits learning. Students may not assimilate information as well, and clutter encourages disruptive behavior. Simply by clearing a work area, a project can be less overwhelming. Another example demonstrates those who have natural light in the classroom learn and comprehend more than those in artificial light. They relate more and so feel connected to their surroundings. Feng Shui can offer many solutions to achieve supportive and sustainable balance.

Feng Shui, like education, provides long-term solutions for our future leaders. While education helps society, improves communication, and builds confidence, classic Feng Shui helps teachers, parents, and students thrive in their environment.
