About the Election of 1792: In 1792, the U.S. had its second presidential election.  By this time, political parties and rivalries were starting to form and those in power began to pick sides. George Washington hoped to retire after his first term; but due to problems growing between the two strongest parties, the Federalists and the Democratic Republicans, he decided to run for reelection to stop the arguments between the political parties and keep the country unified.
