By: Denise Marhoefer for Tim Lacy Below is a short story of Lexi. Just one of many that were fortunate enough to be part of this safety net of love. Lexi came to us with little background info at all. All we really know is that she was passed down to us from 3 different rescues in Michigan. Why these rescues passed her on instead of finding her a loving home I do not know. Isn't that what we are supposed to do as a rescue? Lexi came to us in pretty bad shape. Both of her legs had been broken and never treated. One of them had been broken in two seperate places. She was extremely malnourished. Both of her claws were severely deformed and she had no use of either of them. Three claws on each foot faced foward and one backwards instead of the usual two forward and two back. The three forward claws were entangled amongst each other and none of her claws moved. She climbed with her beak and wings only so her feathers were a total mess. She could not perch at all and either hung on the side of her cage by her beak or rested on platforms. We immediately worked with her diet and began putting some weight on her. I also began doing physical therapy with her claws and legs. Of course we also took her to a certified avain vet as soon as we took her in. After about a month of doing physical therapy on her I began noticing some feelings in her claws. When I wrapped them around my finger and then let go I actually started feeling a little pressure. Soon afterwards I had her perching. She can now climb and perch using both claws. When perching she has to be close to a wall in her cage since one claw is stuck in the upward position and must hold onto the side of the cage. Because of her many handicaps Lexi will be staying here with us for the remainder of her life where we know she will get all the love and care she needs. Tim Lacy Because the Healthipet Network has grown far beyond the dream where it began, they must rely on the kindness of the general public to help keep all their animals healthy and happy. As the economy worsens more and more birds are being surrendered. We sincerely need help with donations for food, healthcare and ultimately these birds being placed in a forever home. Please visit the healthipet network website below to find out how you can help support and make a difference in the lives of these spectacular animals. http://www.healthipet.webs.com/ Healthipet Network Helping Endangered Animals Lives Through Hosting Interstate Placements Evaluations & Teachings # # # HOME OFFICE Hours of Operation: Monday - Friday 10:00am thru 8:00pm Saturdays and Sundays emergency only Telephone 765-644-1888 Fax 765-643-4922 Postal address 810 East 8th Street Anderson, IN 46012 End
