PRLog -- Leila Alem is a senior research scientist at CSIRO, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, Australia's national science agency and one of the largest and most diverse research agencies in the world. Leila has been in this capacity for sixteen years and investigates artificial intelligence methods and tools in a wide range of application sectors, including air traffic control, natural resources management, e-commerce and e-health. She has played a significant role in CSIRO’s building capabilities in the area of AI and HCI and in attracting research staff from overseas. Leila is an expert on learning and cognition, user centered design, user modeling, multi-agent systems, coalition formation, corporate memory, technologies for supporting information sharing, human computer interaction and the evaluation of ICT systems. She has initiated, defined and secured funding for more then ten research and development projects within the governmental and industrial sectors and developed collaborative links and projects with national and international research organizations and cross-organizational research groups such as IREMIA, INRIA, BioMed, CNRS, RMIT, Sydney University, UTS and Monash University. Leila has authored approximately sixty publications and reports including six books/manuscripts, seven journal/book chapters and thirty-five peer-reviewed conference papers. She studied at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis and earned her Ph.D. in artificial intelligence at INRIA Sophia-Antipolis, funded by the French Ministry of Research. After achieving her Ph.D., Leila moved to Australia to pursue a post doctoral degree at Sydney University, within the key centre of design computing and cognition. Presently, she is an esteemed member of the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education and is equally active within the community. In her spare time, Leila enjoys being with family, travel and reading.
