. Starting this week,
bottles of sake will be half off until 6pm. Juban's sake menu is varied enough for connoisseurs to find their favorites, but also color coded for novices to figure out the best sake to fit their preferences. There are nigori bottles with their typical cloudy appearance, Yamahai following ancient brewing methods for deep and rich character from natural yeast integration, Nama that are unpasteurized making them fresh and bright, Genshu which are undiluted and earthy… Art aficionados hoping to gallery hop can pop in for some sake and an early dinner, or even a pre-theater dinner for those heading to Broadway. (Some even say sake's low congener and sulfite content and lower acidity than wine makes it less likely to cause a hangover.)
Juban (
https://www.instagram.com/jubannyc/) has been a neighborhood gem for those in the know since its opening in 2015, with many regulars hoping to keep it a local secret. Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, Juban is ready to step into the limelight beyond its Chelsea neighbors. Its unique mix of tradition and creativity aims to bring a little wonder into Japanese cuisine. Each meal is carefully selected - pickled cucumber and tempura cauliflower;
pork belly and kimchi before flavorful bok choy and juicy chicken meatball skewers. There is also a menu of creative cocktails. Two stand outs are the Forget Me Not with Japanese Roku gin, yuzu and shiso puree, or the playfully named Piccolo's Punch (after a Dragon Ball Z character) with a jalapeno and shishito infusion, tequila and lime.
Founded by Ashwin Balani, a fixture of the space's previous life as Izakaya 10, Juban has been a standout neighborhood secret for the last decade. Juban
means number 10 in Japanese, and in its 10th year, now it is poised to continue delighting diners and creating new regulars.
Open Tuesday-Sunday 4:30-10pm (11pm Friday/Saturday)
207 10th Avenue (between 22nd and 23rd Streets)
