PENNSAUKEN, N.J. - Oct. 22, 2025 - PRLog -- These specially-designed large-bore LVDTs are ideal for use in systems with large moving components, high mechanical loads or extreme environmental conditions.

NewTek's large-bore LVDTs are frequently used with isolation tubes in underwater, nuclear or hydraulic applications where direct exposure to harsh environments must be avoided.  In these configurations, the sensing coil is mounted outside the pressure boundary, while the ferromagnetic core moves within the pressure boundary inside the tube.  The sensor detects its movement through the non-magnetic wall, maintaining full measurement functionality while protecting the electronics from harsh media.

While performing the same function as standard LVDTs, NewTek's large-bore models have a wider internal bore, usually between a half inch and up to three inches.  This makes these LVDTs versatile within a wide range of applications:
  • Long travel measurement while maintaining tight linearity.
  • Stronger mechanical performance, with the extra space within the LVDT housing prevents bending, buckling and vibration ware, especially in long-stroke or high-side-load applications.
  • Enhanced performance in severe environments with high pressure, high temperature, corrosive fluids or radiation exposure.
  • Improved signal stability with reduced electrical noise in noisy or EMI-sensitive environments compared to other position sensing technologies.

Large-Bore LVDT Applications

In high-pressure or chemically-aggressive environments requiring physical separation between the sensing coil and media, the LVDT is mounted externally, while the core moves inside the isolation tube.  To maintain magnetic coupling across the isolation tube, a large-bore LVDT, sometimes with a larger core, can maintain signal strength. A larger core compensates for the increased separation and potential signal attenuation, ensuring adequate signal strength and measurement accuracy.

NewTek large-bore LVDTs also are used in a variety of industries in applications ranging from downhole oil & gas tools, valve positioning in high-pressure hydraulic systems and rolling mills and presses in manufacturing.  For example, NewTek large-bore LVDTs can be used in hydraulic and pneumatic cylinder positioning of injection molding machines where large piston rods require thicker, more robust cores for reliable feedback and a strong mechanical link.

NewTek specializes in custom-engineered LVDT solutions and can design large-bore sensors in various shapes, sizes and housings to meet application-specific needs.  The company is currently developing a sensor with a housing diameter of three inches, demonstrating its capability to deliver extremely rugged and scalable solutions.  To explore how NewTek's custom sensing solutions, visit our website (https://www.newteksensors.com/custom-lvdts/) or contact sales@newteksensors.com.
