|  Statement from President Perdomo:Naismith Foundation to Withdraw Planned Ava E.C. Thomas Tribute
As President of the Naismith International Basketball Foundation, I want to personally thank everyone who supported our intent to honor Ava E.C. Thomas — a young woman whose strength and perseverance had inspired the creation of the Renee DiGiulio–Naismith Student and Grit Award in her name. However, out of respect for the wishes of the Thomas family, the Foundation will no longer move forward with the planned celebration. While this was not the outcome we envisioned, we bow out with grace and honor, dignity and respect. wishing Ava and her family nothing but continued success. Especially Dr. Thomas — who had shared her amazing triumphs in the beginning of this journey! At the Naismith Foundation, we hold firm to our founding values: Strong in Body Clean in Mind & Lofty in Ideals! We believe life will always return what you invest in it — and even when plans shift, gratitude and respect must remain constant.
