Celebrating Mother's Day, the Igbo Way

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - June 19, 2025 - PRLog -- Men of the Igbo Nigerian Catholic Community (INCC) celebrated Mother's Day at Saint Patrick's Church in Bridgeport to appreciate the critical and unique roles women play in their families and society.

The Parish Priest, Dr. Father Hyginus Agu, and four Clergies (Fathers Michael Nwokocha, Peter Anumaka, Laurence Okwuosa, and Cajetan Oleaghara) conducted the mass.

In his homily, Father Agu remarked that mothers and women play indispensable roles in families and communities. Showering mothers and women with love is one way men show appreciation for all that women do. Many of these contributions, the parish priest noted, are things men simply cannot replicate. Before the mass ended, the women gathered before the altar to receive additional blessings.

Using the opportunity, the chairman of INCC, Chief Anthony Madu, thanked the women for being the bedrock that carried the different facets of parish activities for so long. He added that hosting the women, cooking for them, and serving them is only an attempt to replicate the invaluable role they play in the family and the community.

Entertainment and music followed the church services. Women joyfully danced to several musical pieces, including the classic favorite "Sweet Mother". They cut the cake presented by the men and enjoyed their drinks, jollof rice, dry beef, moimoi, and soup, among other traditional foods.

As the celebration continued, the women received packaged gifts donated by INCC men, bales of traditional fabrics donated by Father Augustine Okoroafor, and Miraculous medals of Our Lady donated by the cathedral Administrator, Father Arthur.

About 100 people, including children, men, youths, and people from other nationalities, attended the event.
