South African Government Announces SASSA Grant Increases and SRD Extension for 2025

JOHANNESBURG - May 26, 2025 - PRLog -- Effective 1 April 2025, the Old Age, Disability, and Care Dependency Grants will see an increase of R130, bringing the total monthly payout to R2,310. The Child Support Grant rises by R30 to R560, while the Foster Care Grant increases to R1,250. The SRD grant, though remaining at R370, has been extended for another year—continuing to provide crucial support for unemployed individuals and vulnerable households.

"These increases are essential as we continue to respond to the rising cost of living," said Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana during the 2025 Budget Speech. "This adjustment reaffirms our commitment to protecting our most vulnerable citizens while balancing fiscal sustainability."

In total, over R250 billion has been allocated toward social grants for the 2025/2026 fiscal year, including R35 billion dedicated to maintaining the SRD grant. The increase comes amid widespread public calls for expanded social support, with food, transport, and basic living expenses becoming more unaffordable for many South Africans.

The government also emphasized that existing beneficiaries do not need to reapply—increased payments will be processed automatically according to SASSA's regular schedule.

This move aims to provide short-term relief while the government continues its broader efforts to stimulate economic growth, reduce unemployment, and improve access to social services.
