Directed by Shequeta L. Smith (Project Greenlight) and starring Curtis Hamilton (Insecure, Surviving Compton), Dick Control tells the story of a rapper who is cursed by a groupie—who also happens to be a witch. The film was shot in just one day in Woodland Hills, CA, during a COVID-19 surge, further underscoring the team's commitment to telling this powerful story. Since its premiere, Dick Control has been showcased at 20 film festivals between 2022 and 2023, including notable festivals such as Tallgrass, Cucalorus, and the Greater Cleveland Urban Film Festival. The film has earned accolades across the circuit, including five wins and the prestigious People's Choice Award at the Denton Black Film Festival. Most recently, Dick Control was selected by Mometu for their Short Film Contest, advancing to the Top 30 this week. As the competition narrows to the Top 10 throughout December, the ultimate winner will receive a $5,000 prize. Audiences can watch the film on Mometu and vote to support its journey through the contest:
From Personal Insight to Cinematic Activism Drawing on personal experience as a former college representative at NC State University for Def Jam and Roc-a-Fella Records, Shequeta witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by women in the music industry. The Megan Thee Stallion shooting inspired a response: a film addressing the complexities of misogynoir and how Black women often face blame in the wake of their own victimization. "When Megan got shot, I couldn't believe the narrative that unfolded—how do you get blamed for being shot on purpose by someone else?" says Smith. "That disbelief gave me the idea for Dick Control. It's more than a film; it's a conversation starter about accountability and the systemic disrespect Black women face in hip-hop culture." A Legacy of Socially Conscious Filmmaking Dick Control follows in the footsteps of Rayven Choi Films' previous success, The Takeover, a body-swap short film addressing the challenges of online dating for Black women. Released a decade ago, The Takeover went viral on YouTube, garnering over 400,000 views, and continues to stream on multiple platforms.
