Arie Dosoretz, M.D. wins Lee County Medical Society's Scientific Achievement Award

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Oct. 12, 2023 - PRLog -- Dr. Arie Dosoretz, managing partner of Advocate Radiation Oncology and Southwest Florida Proton, has earned a Scientific Achievement Award through the Lee County Medical Society Foundation. Advocate Radiation Oncology also was honored with the organization's Health Education Award.

Presented Sept. 29 at the organization's 11th annual Medical Service Awards celebration, the Scientific Achievement Award recognizes a member for his or her outstanding work in scientific medical research, which includes both basic science and clinical research. The Health Education Award recognizes the professional or public health education activities of a physician or group of physicians.

As a practicing radiation oncologist in Southwest Florida, Dosoretz saw a need for enhanced cancer care in the region and founded Advocate Radiation Oncology in 2019. In less than five years, he expanded the practice to eight cancer treatment centers with 12 board-certified physicians across six counties.

An accomplished researcher, Dosoretz recognized the future of radiation oncology includes proton therapy, an advanced form of radiation therapy that uses charged proton particles to destroy cancer cells. With no proton therapy centers on Florida's west coast, Dosoretz began exploring the feasibility of constructing a facility in Southwest Florida. In June, Dosoretz joined local elected officials, health care leaders and business partners at a groundbreaking ceremony for Southwest Florida Proton. The medical facility is expected to open in late 2024 in Estero and feature Ion Beam Application's ProteusONE.

"I have lived in Southwest Florida most of my life, and while we're known for beautiful beaches, golf courses and the natural habitat, our region was not necessarily recognized as a national leader in cancer care," Dosoretz said. "Collectively, we are changing that narrative. It's extremely humbling to receive the Scientific Achievement Award and Health Education Award from a great organization like the Lee County Medical Society, and I'm excited to continue building a comprehensive cancer care program here so Southwest Florida residents will no longer need to travel for their treatments."

The Lee County Medical Society is a professional organization of more than 800 physician members practicing in Lee County. Its foundation supports the charitable efforts of physician members with an aim to improve the quality of life for its members and the public. This year, the foundation presented awards to nine individuals and practices.

"Faced with challenges left in the wake of Hurricane Ian, these medical and community health care providers overcame obstacles with grace and are shining examples of a community's devotion to help those in need and improve the delivery of healthcare to its residents," said Lee County Medical Society President Dr. Ryan Lundquist. "We are honored they call our area home and deserve an award and our recognition for providing exceptional care, leadership and compassion to everyone they serve in Lee County."
