Rotary Club of Jasper Announces ADA Compliant Website
By: Rotary Club of Jasper
The Rotary Club of Jasper has rebuilt its website from the ground up to be accessible and easy to use by everyone. The rebuild was undertaken to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) specify three levels of compliance: A, AA and AAA. In most cases the new website meets the strictest level, AAA.
While an ADA compliant website might not look different from others at first glance, many features make it easier to use for disabled people and those without disabilities. But where the website really stands out is in how well it serves those who have disabilities such as visual, auditory, physical, cognitive and other impairments.
Examples of the ways the website is easier to use for everyone are:
In addition, disabled people will find the website easier to use because it is keyboard operable ( for those unable to use a mouse), has the ability to bypass the navigation by using a "skip to content" link, avoids images of text, has a transcript on the video, and has well described images. These are only some of the new features.
Frank Gómez, a Jasper resident and owner of Empowered Marketing, took on this project on a pro bono basis because of his extensive experience with website ADA compliance and his passion for using best practices. The new website will also benefit the Rotary club by making it much easier to update and to share information with the public and club members.
