By: Japan USA Precision Tools Honing is a popular abrasive machining process that produces a precision surface on a metal workpiece by scrubbing an abrasive grinding stone or grinding wheel against it along a controlled path. Typical applications are the finishing of cylinders for internal combustion engines, air bearing spindles and gears. There are many types of hones, but all consist of abrasive stones that are held under pressure against the surface they are working on. In honing, where very high precision is required, even small deviations between the center of the tool and the center of the pilot hole can have a significant impact on machining accuracy, quality, and tool life. As the honing tool is pushed forcefully into the pilot hole's deviated position, it also experiences a load due to the reaction force from the pilot hole.
