Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance on schedule to complete apartment building in new rental community

IMMOKALEE, Fla. - June 21, 2023 - PRLog -- Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance is nearing completion of the exterior construction of the first of eight, two-story buildings that, when finished, will allow qualified families in Immokalee to move from substandard housing into quality, affordable rental apartments.

Since construction began in March, the first- and second-floor exterior and interior walls have been completed. Walls are constructed with concrete cinder blocks, ensuring the building is Category 5 hurricane rated. Additionally, the roof trusses have been erected and roof installation will soon follow. Heatherwood Construction anticipates that windows and electrical installation will be completed in June.

"It is exhilarating and moving to see this building come together because of the support of generous individuals and organizations who share our mission of providing safe, affordable and quality housing to hardworking families in Immokalee," said Arol Buntzman, chair of the Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance. "For so many of these families, decent housing is the missing link for them to escape from poverty and exploitation. Thanks to our supporters and community partners, we are paving the way to a vibrant, new community that will replace substandard and overcrowded housing, giving hope and stability to so many Immokalee families."

Once complete, the new community will include 128 two- and three-bedroom apartments, along with a community center for meetings, after-school programs, health care assistance and more. Rent will be capped at no more than 30% of a family's income.

The Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) created in 2018 by a group of concerned citizens who saw the damage done by Hurricane Irma to already substandard trailers and shacks rented by farmworker and other low-income families in Immokalee.
