Brain Fog in Children: Tips to Improve Concentration

NOIDA, India - June 21, 2023 - PRLog -- Brain fog refers to a combination of persistent signs and symptoms that can last for varying durations, often following an illness like Covid. Children and young people experiencing brain fog may exhibit fatigue, lack of concentration, slowed thinking, confusion, and physical symptoms such as migraines or headaches. Although brain fog has been associated with "long Covid," it is recognized as a condition with multiple causes that affect the body's functioning and its interaction with the environment.

Stress and anxiety are among the most common triggers of brain fog. Prolonged high levels of stress can diminish concentration and leave individuals feeling mentally unclear or muddled. The intense pressure faced by children in highly stressful school and competitive environments can significantly impact their concentration, energy levels, and immunity, leading to brain fog. Vishal Sharma, CEO and co-founder of Childrenplus, emphasizes the harmful effects of prolonged stress, comparing it to running on a hamster wheel until exhaustion.

Excessive screen time is another contributing factor to brain fog. Dr. Amritash Rai, Clinical Director at Childrenplus, highlights the impact of constant screen exposure, explaining that there is increasing evidence linking the continuous small dopamine 'hits' from screens and the hours spent on them to reduced concentration span and energy levels. The content on these devices is designed to provide instant gratification, leading to exhaustion and exacerbating brain fog symptoms.

Research has shown that brain fog is one of the most common persistent symptoms following viral infections. Children with underlying conditions like ADHD, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, and anxiety are more susceptible to experiencing brain fog. These disorders place a strain on cognitive faculties and significantly impact various aspects of a child's life.

To address brain fog and improve concentration, Dr. Rai recommends a holistic approach summarized by the acronym DESIST:

Diet:
A balanced diet that includes protein, fruits, and vegetables can enhance immunity and support healthy brain function, promoting optimal cognitive abilities.

Exercise: Regular exercise improves cardiovascular health, releases endorphins that contribute to overall well-being and concentration, and spending time outdoors in the sunshine provides a valuable source of vitamin D.

Screen time: Excessive screen time, exceeding three hours a day, has negative effects on mental health and well-being. Encouraging breaks from screens and incorporating physical activity into daily routines can mitigate the impacts.

Improve Sleep: Sufficient sleep is vital for a healthy mind. Children should aim for at least 8 to 9 hours of quality sleep per night. Reducing screen time before bedtime and implementing good sleep hygiene practices can promote restful sleep.

Treat illness: Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of psychological and physical illnesses that contribute to brain fog are crucial. Seeking help from expert psychologists can result in effective therapeutic techniques to improve mood, anxiety, and alleviate brain fog symptoms.
