Tree Pruning Using Tree Topping or Pollarding

It's essential for trees in an urban environment due to natural pruning not being an option like it is with trees in a forest. For the trees in your yard, it's important to keep up with the proper maintenance for their structural integrity and aesthetics. Its vitally important to use proper techniques when pruning a tree, otherwise you might damage or kill your tree. We want to go over two main pruning techniques; topping and pollarding.

Topping

This is a technique where the entire top half of the tree is removed, branches, trunks and all. Stubs and lateral branches can be left as long as they are too weak or small and will not assume the role of a principal branch. A lot of different tree species do not respond well to this pruning technique.
