By: Live Healthy & Thrive Youth Foundation, Inc. The Gardens Are For Kids™ program focuses on donating a vegetable garden to assist public schools with an interactive gardening experience. The goal of the program is to teach children the importance of fresh foods for a healthy diet and lifestyle so they can ward off obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 5 children and adolescents in the U.S. have obesity. For children and adolescents aged 2-19 years in 2017-2020: The prevalence of obesity was 19.7% and affected about 14.7 million children and adolescents. This year, Mental Health Illness Awareness Week is Oct 2-8. "In 2022, schools are faced with the lingering threat of COVID-19, Monkeypox, and rising food costs. These challenges can be overwhelming. Providing a gardening program to schools can be both academic and therapeutic for the students," said Lori A. Manns, President of Live Healthy & Thrive Youth Foundation, Inc. "For many children, participating in a school garden is their first exposure to agriculture. Being involved in a project where they participate from seed to harvest gives them a sense of accomplishment and self-esteem in challenging times," said Manns. LHTYF's garden project is provided free to Atlanta area schools annually and made possible by the support of sponsors and community donors.
