PPGJLI Hosts First Screening of "The Ghana Year of Return Trip" Documentary

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - April 6, 2022 - PRLog -- The public is invited to attend a free event entitled Building a Black Ecosystem. The community teach-in features the exclusive first screening of the documentary "The Ghana Year of Return Trip" by Dr. Artika Tyner on Saturday, May 7, 2022, from 1-2 p.m.

The event will be held at the Rondo Community Library, located at 461 Dale St. in St. Paul, MN. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about Pan-Africanism, develop their leadership skills, and engage in a cultural learning experience. The screening is part of the Akwaaba Community Teach-In Series being conducted by the non-profit organization, Planting People Growing Justice™ Leadership Institute (PPGJLI), founded by Tyner.

In 2019, Tyner led a pilgrimage to Ghana as part of "The Year of the Return" that marked the 400th anniversary of when the first ships arrived in the U.S. carrying enslaved Africans. The trip provided travelers with a unique Sankofa experience that's recorded in "The Ghana Year of Return Trip" documentary.

During the screening, individuals will learn about the Senchi Ferry, the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, the pain and indignity of the Last Bath, the Cape Coast slave castle, and the Door of No Return. For those that were unable to make the pilgrimage in person, the documentary provides a way for African Americans to experience their lost heritage and learn about the struggles of their ancestors.

The event is just one of the efforts by the PPGJLI (https://www.ppgjli.org/) to foster leadership development through key cultural learning experiences. It's a model developed by Tyner, founder of PPGJLI, after a decade of research. Building a Black Ecosystem is just one of the projects PPGJLI is planning. Future events will include Akwaaba community teach-ins, community art exhibitions with photos and videos of the Ghana pilgrimage, and providing scholarships for the organization's The Beyond Return pilgrimages to Ghana.
