PRLog -- Cycling plays a critical role in creating a green and sustainable community. Vancouver's municipalities are working towards making cycling safe and convenient for residents of all ages and abilities. The City's transportation plan, Transportation 2040, sets a target that two-thirds of all trips by 2040 will be made by walking, cycling or transit. Transportation 2040 also sets a target to improve safety and eliminate fatalities in bicycle-and-
car accidents.
Based on the analysis of reported cycling collision data from ICBC, there are the following key cycling safety issues identified:
- Doorings. Doorings occurred when bicycle users were struck by or struck a door of a parked motor vehicle, typically on the driver's side.
- Conflict Zones. Mid-block conflict zones such as driveways, parking lots and alleyways accounted for approximately 10.7% of all reported cycling collisions.
- Right Hooks. Collisions involving right-turning vehicles, also known as 'right hooks,' mostly happened in the downtown core.
Bikeapproach is an intelligent safety system that constantly monitors the speed and distance of oncoming cyclists and notifies motorists via GPS to prevent and reduce the impact of car-and-bicycle collisions. In places with poor visibility of approaching cyclists, the Bikeapproach system increases traffic safety by giving timely warnings of cyclists crossing the road.
