There are three major activities you can perform with the Dell SupportAssist programme on the Dell Support website. When you perform one of these activities, you will be invited to download and install Dell SupportAssist if you haven't previously done so, or the application will automatically start and install the newest version before you finish the task.

Identify the Product

The Dell SupportAssist app is most commonly used for this purpose. You can have your product recognised at various stages on the Dell Support website so that Dell can deliver tailored support. When you click Detect Product, the application starts on your computer and recognises your Dell PC's Service Tag. Dell then looks up product information, such as your original system setup and warranty expiration date, using the Service Tag to give a product-specific support experience.

Driver Detection

You can do a Detect Drivers (System Analysis) on the Driver & Downloads tab of the Product Support page once you've identified your product.
