PRLog -- Defaming Ayurvedic medical science and Ayurvedic practitioners by Indian Medical Association A derogatory approach against a 5000 year old medical science system. By Dr.Abhay Kumar Pati, D.Sc.
Ayurveda is the ancient indigenous system of Indian Traditional medical science, which is being practiced in India and Indian subcontinent for centuries. It is the science of life and natures medicine, which deals with human beings in harmony with Mother Nature. Ayurveda can offer different modalities such as Dinacharya (maintenance of personal hygiene); diet and lifestyle, which modern medicine lacks. Ayurveda does not only treat the causative factor of a particular physical health problem, but also treats the body, mind and spirit. The basic principles of Ayurveda is based on Tridosha - Vata (air), Pitta ( fire), Kapha (water) and plays an important role in Ayurvedic
medicine as well as Chinese medicine too. Charak was a physician and Sushruta was a surgeon 5000 years ago in India. Their composition of Samhitas ( large compilation of scientific books on Ayurveda), are well recognized by the International History of Medical Science. Indian medical doctors who are active members of IMA (Indian Medical Association)
criticize Ayurveda and Ayurvedic medical science as quackery, yet they have not been involved in discovering modern drugs after 75 years Indian independence. IMA is 100 yrs old and Ayurveda is 5000 years old. I question how IMA could justify Ayurveda and Ayurvedic medical science as bogus, useless, and quackery. Modern drugs, including morphine, digitalis, dopamine, reserpine, berberine and many more are derived from Ayurvedic medicinal plants of India which were recorded in vedic medicine thousands of years ago. Currently, no modern drug molecules have been discovered in India, whereas Ayurvedic single standardized herbal extracts such as: Curcumin ( turmeric), Testophane ( fenugreek), Aswagandha, Amla, Triphala, Haritaki, Neem, Tribulas ( Gokshura), Jatamanshi, (Valerian), Tulsi (Ocimum), Isabgul ( Psyllium), Gugul, Boswelia and hundreds of Ayurvedic supplements continue to grow in popularity and are a part of health foods and functional foods in America and Europe and other parts of the world. Panchakarma Therapies & Treatment in Ayurvedic plays an important role for introducing Ayurvedic medicine to westerners. Both Yoga and Panchakrama have been a medium for Ayurveda in North America, since I arrived in the USA over 40 years ago. Can the IMA offer similar therapies like Indian Yoga, Meditation and Panchakarma of Ayurvedic medicine to westerners? Chinese people and their doctors are proud of their Chinese Medicine, Chinese herbal products, Acupuncture, yet many people from India (including many Indian Medical doctors) were brainwashed by the British with their acceptance of modern Western English medicine.
