Follow on Google News | Mumpreneur invents smart meal preservation system to reduce food wasteWith Smartfreeze containers, startup founder Amanda Gordon wants to help families prepare and preserve healthy, balanced meals
By: Smartfreeze containers Gordon hated wasting food, but labeling single-use plastic freezer bags was inconsistent with her commitment to living a green and eco-conscious lifestyle. So she decided to create a smart and sustainable solution for saving leftovers for future use with "Smartfreeze" The idea is simple: With Smartfreeze, anyone can cook, scan, and freeze meals they have prepared for the weeks ahead. Each tight-fitting Smartfreeze lid contains a QR code that can be easily scanned in the Smartfreeze app with a smartphone or mobile device. The user can then enter information about that container of food, including what it is and when it was prepared. They can also set a reminder of the food's upcoming expiry date. Smartfreeze is the first and only mobile-app-enabled and sustainable food container that notifies the user of how long food has been stored in the fridge or freezer. The goal is to reduce food waste, one meal at a time. Gordon said like many working parents, finding the time to prepare healthy, balanced meals for her family every day can be challenging. Cooking in advance and freezing meals makes it easier provided a person can remember what was prepared and when it was frozen. "Although I tried to meal prep and freeze food for a later date, I could never remember how long each meal had been frozen, so I ended up throwing away a lot of food in the process," she said. "Smartfreeze was born out of the frustration of wanting a solution where meals and leftovers could finally be frozen and recorded in an app, providing an inventory of what is stored." The smart storage containers are manufactured from eco-friendly, food-grade silicone as a way to cut down on single use plastics sent to landfills. The containers can be stored in the fridge and freezer and are microwave, oven, and dishwasher safe. Each lid's tight seal means it can be used to hold liquids like sauces and soups. Smartfreeze containers will be launching in mid-May of this year. Learn more and sign up to receive updates at https://www.smartfreezecontainers.com.
