Are Productions Missing the Full Opportunities of Social Media Marketing?
Social Media has brought a new way for celebs & fans to interact. For decades, fans have wanted to build a relationship with celebrities & usually this is done vicariously through media and events. It worked well in creating a marketing relationship.
It was not that long ago when the music industry failed to harness the power of digital sales and distribution. They had to play catch up and regain digital control over their music catalogue assets. Now that they have embraced and anticipate the digital marketplace, they are back to making record profits in exploiting the digital opportunities in the music industry. They are also in a better place to anticipate and more rapidly adapt to new markets and changes. This also encompasses the use of social media and online streaming to increase revenues and audiences worldwide.
In the time of home video and as it evolved (good or bad) to laserdisc's, DVD's and Blu-ray many viewers would love the outtakes and behind the scenes footage features on these mediums would further build a relationship with the viewers. TV shows and specials in the 70's and 80's would draw decent viewer ratings and again, not only helped build audience relationships but were also used to draw more attention to shows approaching a new tv season, motion picture sequels and franchises in addition to new projects by the studios.
