Supporting positive health outcomes in the Pilbara, The McGowan Government of Western Australia is trialling the digitalisation of the Banned Drinkers Register (BDR), with the view to expand into additional locations. Effective from December 1, 2020, anyone who wishes to purchase alcohol from a liquor outlet will be required to present their identification upon purchase.
Scantek's cutting-edge technology enables staff to verify a person's identity in real-time, confirming whether they are listed on the BDR. The entire scanning process takes seconds, making it easier for liquor outlets to apply the BDR consistently. Developed right here in Western Australia, artificial intelligence is at its heart, using a unique mix of optical character recognition and machine learning techniques.
Scantek's scanning solutions verify more than 20 million identities across Australia each year. With over ten years' experience in identity verification, they have successfully delivered similar initiatives such as a Takeaway Alcohol Management System in the Kimberley. Selected by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Culture as part of a competitive process, Scantek were the natural fit for the BDR initiative.
With Terminals rolled out to 39 venues across the Pilbara, Scantek's solution will provide instant access to an extensive banned drinkers list. It also detects underage, fake and expired IDs. Ches Rafferty, Scantek Co-Founder and CEO said: "Scantek are a proud West Australian business who are excited to work with Minister Papalia and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Culture to apply our technology and expertise in keeping the West Australian community safe."
