SLM Lightens The (Print) Load with Selective Laser Melting

PITTSBURGH - Oct. 14, 2020 - PRLog -- We've come a long way since 3D printing was first introduced to the world back in the 1980s. 3D printers now have the capabilities to produce products as small as chess pieces or as large as houses. It saves time and money for almost every industry you can think of and is constantly being improved. SLM, for example, focuses on creating 3D printers that use a metal additive that helps customers reduce the weight of products, gives them freedom of design, shortens their supply lead times, and improves the quality of their product. This weekend, Tomorrow's World Today field reporter Darieth Chisolm is heading over to SLM headquarters in Michigan to learn about the technology behind Select Laser Melting and how it is helping the aerospace, automotive, medical, and industrial industries save both time and money by giving companies the ability to create parts on-site.

Chisolm then heads to Honeywell in Arizona to see first-hand how companies are using SLM's 3D printers. The additives used in the printing process create parts that weigh less and take less time to produce. She has a chance to tour a test plane, which tests products ranging from engines to heat exchanges to flight control devices that were created with 3D printing technology. The products printed go through rigorous testing via flights around the world before they are delivered to customers. Because 3D printed parts weight significantly less than their metal counterparts, airlines are able to make room for more passengers and luggage.
