SHERMAN, Conn. - Oct. 11, 2020 - PRLog -- Forty years ago, Marie Ruggles got her start researching nutrition and working in the public health sector managing chronic disease and maximizing wellness.

Today, she teaches people how to be proactive about their health, but there was a lack of reliable information for the layperson to learn from. So, she decided to write a home reference guide people could use to learn about natural options for preventative health care and everyday wellness challenges.

Thus began her journey to teach people how to build their own kitchen pharmacies and make the best use of them.

She breaks personal self-care down into three phases:
  1. Building a strong foundation.
  2. What to do after exposure to an unhealthy person or environment.
  3. Immune-boosting support when you feel like you're coming down with something.
To make this food-as-medicine pharmacy accessible to everyone, she focuses on whole foods, superfoods and nutrients that are readily accessible, as well as a few key supplements for those on a budget.

These details, and more, are covered in the latest release from Emerald Lake Books, "Optimize Your Immune System: Create Health and Resilience with a Kitchen Pharmacy" (ISBN: 978-194584730-1), released on September 29, 2020.

Diana Noland, co-editor of Integrative and Functional Medical Nutrition Therapy, described the book as "A treasure trove of practical information arriving at such a time of global urgency to strengthen our immune systems."

While the book was not written specifically to address COVID-19, the author had been thinking about writing it for some time and felt the need became more urgent as she heard from people how afraid they were of getting sick. Often, people seemed to think there was nothing they could do to prevent it, when Ruggles knew that a healthy immune system will fend off many more viral attacks than a weakened one ever could.

Tara R. Alemany, founder of Emerald Lake Books, said, "One of the things that appealed to us about Marie's book is how accessible it is to everyone. Not only does she provide you with all the information you need to build a strong immune system, but she also encourages you to do it at your own pace. There's no 'guilting' you into doing what's good for you. Instead, she educates and inspires, so we all can take steps to be responsible for staying healthy, no matter what virus we are faced with."

Based in Sherman, CT, Emerald Lake Books is a boutique publishing company specializing in working with positive people who want to make a difference in the world, while building their business or legacy at the same time.
