Is PicoSure the best laser for darker skin types? Not all Lasers are created equal. There is not one laser that treats everything but there is finally one and only laser that can safely treat any skin color.
By: Dr Anna Avaliani PicoSure Laser Expert Many treatments for skin of color have always been associated with limitations due to fairly high side effect profile. Lasers can cause burns, scars, potentially make skin turn darker or lighter. There are some super aggressive lasers that are completely contraindicated in people with darker skin types because they can permanently destroy melanin in their skin, causing permanent discoloration and skin whitening. PicoSure laser is FDA approved for skin types IV-VI, and is also cleared for treatment of pigmentation disorders such as sun spots, dark spots, flat moles, melasma, birthmarks, Nevus of Otto are among just a few to name. PicoSure is also FDA cleared for acne scars, pore reduction, skin texture improvement, fine lines and wrinkle reduction and when in the hands of an expert, it can be performed on the entire body and even around the eyes. Emphasis should be made that it is around and on the lower eye area as the upper eye and eye lid area cannot be treated under standard laser set up. In order to treat the upper eyelid area, the eye needs to be prepared with numbing drops and have intraocular laser shields inserted over the eye itself and under the eyelid area, so the eye is protected by the special eye shield when the laser is operating and treating the eyelid area.
