"Fort Worth Christian School is thrilled to have Misty Overman as its next head of school," said Board Chair John Feray. "Dr. Overman's distinguished background in Christian education and her demonstrated ability to propel an institution forward with vision, innovation, and momentum makes her uniquely qualified to lead FWC into this next chapter in our history."
Overman brings to her new position more than 30 years of independent school administrative and teaching experience at Alabama Christian Academy and Greater Atlanta Christian School. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in secondary school mathematics education and holds both a master's degree and a doctorate in educational leadership, also from the University of Georgia. Overman sits on the Board of Trustees for the National Christian School Association (NCSA) and chairs the NCSA Accreditation Commission. Overman has also partnered with Apple Corporation, in Cupertino, CA, to develop and lead professional development workshops for independent schools.
Her philosophy, as both an educator and an administrator, is rooted in a growth mindset in which programs, processes, and standards are examined on a regular basis for both rigor and relevancy. Students learn and are taught best in a nurturing setting, she says, where they are encouraged to take meaningful risks and, as a result, appreciate that they can and do learn from their mistakes and failures.
"I'm excited to join Fort Worth Christian because of its long and rich history of providing Christ-centered education in an environment where each student is truly 'known, loved, and valued.' FWC's values of courageous leadership, always learning and growing, respect, distinctive by design and spirit of joyful service, resonate with me," Overman said. "FWC prepares its students not only for college, but also for life — a purposeful life, and that's as relevant today as it was when the school was founded."
Cal Smallwood, chair of the Search Committee, said Overman's experience and expertise were soundly endorsed by those with whom she has worked in other schools.
"The committee was impressed by Dr. Overman's breadth of experience in building and stewarding programs that stand as examples of excellence for other independent schools. In speaking with her former colleagues, our confidence in our choice was reinforced by their accounts of her leadership skills, ability to build consensus, financial prudence, and resourcefulness. She was lauded for her ability to balance tradition with innovation and creativity with prudence," said Smallwood. "Dr. Overman's enthusiasm for our Vision: Forward strategic plan was palpable and I'm excited at the prospect of Dr. Overman taking the helm and moving us forward — as an institution and as a community."
Vision: Forward was ratified by the Board of Trust in June 2019 and will inform Overman's priorities and key initiatives for the direction of the school in the next several years.
"I'm excited to join the FWC community and the prospect of working together to continue to make plans, shape programs, and improve facilities for our present and future student body. The work the Board of Trust, school administration, and FWC parents have done in crafting a dynamic strategic plan has set a strong and exciting foundation for what's next at FWC," says Overman.
