NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - June 27, 2019 - PRLog -- The Orange County personal injury law firm of Bisnar Chase has obtained an $11,253,580 judgment for a man who suffered major injuries and damage to his spinal column as a result of a car accident, which was triggered by a drunk driver. Judgment on the case, which was filed in Orange County Superior Court, was entered on June 17 in favor of Edward Mora and his wife, Camille Castillo-Villaroman.

The $11.2-million judgment awarded to Mora and his wife is made up of past and future medical bills, past, and future lost earnings and pain and suffering. Castillo-Villaroman was awarded loss of consortium as part of the judgment. The couple has three young children.

Bisnar Chase personal injury trial lawyer Tom Antunovich, who handled the case, said what gives him the most satisfaction about this case is helping this family whose lives were upended by an intoxicated driver.

"(Mora) and his wife deserve every penny of this judgment," Antunovich said. "They are both good people whose lives were drastically changed because of this horrible crash caused by a drunk driver."

While Mora has made a good recovery and has now learned to adapt to his injuries, he and his family struggled through the time it took for him to heal from debilitating spinal trauma, Antunovich said.

The car crash occurred early morning on May 15, 2016, in Orange. Castillo-Villaroman was driving his vehicle while Mora was in the front passenger seat. As the vehicle made a left turn at an intersection, an intoxicated Edgar Bernal, who was driving a Ford E-150 van, ran a red light, crashing into the left front side of the other car. The van driven by Bernal belonged to his employer, Car Stereo Plaza, Inc. After the collision, Bernal fled the scene by foot and was later apprehended by police.

As a result of the crash, Mora suffered spinal fractures and a torn meniscus in his right knee. He underwent an emergency T3-T8 spinal fusion with instrumentation at UCI Medical Center. He also had to undergo a meniscus repair surgery. After the crash, Mora spent three weeks in and out of medical facilities before finally returning home.

At the time, Mora worked as a security guard for Spectrum Security Services with the goal of becoming a police officer. Antunovich said the car crash dealt a devastating blow to Mora's career goals.

"As a result of his injuries, Mora was no longer able to work as a security guard and his dream of a career in law enforcement was shattered," he said. "Mora is now limited to working in administrative positions."

Antunovich said this particular case result serves as evidence that those who suffer serious injuries in car crashes should not accept a lower settlement from the insurance company.

"People should know that insurance companies are in the business of paying as little as possible to resolve the claims of injured persons," he said. "This judgment is proof that the value of pain and suffering can be substantial."
