Sakai 2019 Released; Includes Native Functionality And New Features Based On Faculty Needs

Sakai LMS today announced the release of Sakai 2019, which upgrades Sakai functionality and user experience, based on extensive feedback from faculty partners.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - April 10, 2019 - PRLog -- Sakai 2019 will include native RUBRICS, which will enable university faculty to easily create grading rubrics and use them in Assignments, Tests & Quizzes, Forums, and the Gradebook. By creating native rubrics functionality, Sakai continues to innovate to improve learning outcomes. RUBRICS eliminates the need for institutions to use third party rubric services, making faculty experience smoother, easier, and more seamless.

Sakai, the LMS that provides the best learning outcomes for students according to independent survey research1, is a truly open solution that is built entirely by its close-knit user community.  Sakai 2019 owes many of its improvements to requests by faculty, including improvements to user experience in assignments, gradebooks, rosters, and tests and quizzes.

Dr. Charles Severance, Chair of Sakai's Management Committee, says, "From the beginning, Sakai has utilized its open source community to understand faculty needs and develop a system that improved learning and teaching. Sakai 2019 leverages this unique, powerful, and engaged community to create a more innovative and effective LMS than ever before. I am confident that faculty and students will find that it enhances their teaching and learning."

"Sakai for 2019 includes a number of elegant, innovative, and efficient technological improvements developed using faculty and student input. Sakai continues to be the LMS that provides the best learning outcomes for higher education. Longsight is proud of our contributions to Sakai for 2019 and pleased to be part of this vibrant community," notes Sam Ottenhoff, President and CTO of Longsight Inc.

Sakai 2019's new functionality includes improvements in ASSIGNMENTS, providing user interface and communication improvements. It also improves GRADEBOOKS' grading workflow, and provides new layout cards in ROSTER. Additionally, Sakai 2019 provides a simplified, more responsive landing page and other user experience improvements in TESTS AND QUIZZES.

Special thanks: Earle Nietzel (Longsight) senior developer and release manager; Jolie Tingen (Duke University), QA leader; and Wilma Hodges (Longsight), community coordinator and product leader.  Many others from the Sakai community also contributed to the release.
