How to Get Prepared for Root Canal Treatment

Depending on how bad the infection is, opting to undergo a root canal can save your tooth and prevent the need for a false tooth replacement. What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal or an endodontic treatment is a procedure that removes the pulp, or nerve from your tooth. This is done when the pulp is infected, damaged or already dead. There are many ways your tooth pulp can become damaged, most often it's due to the bacteria that enters your mouth through cracks, cavities or improper fillings. In some cases, trauma can also damage the pulp of your tooth.

Who Performs the Procedure?

A general dentist, dental surgeon or endodontist typically will perform the root canal procedure. If the root canal needs to be performed on a child, a pediatric dentist will be tasked with completing the procedure.

How Is a Root Canal Done?

When you first visit a Downtown Toronto Dentist, they will examine the surrounding gums to ensure there is no swelling or active infection in the treatment area. Then, you will be asked to take an x-ray of the tooth that will be treated. Once the films have returned, the dentist will numb the treatment area with a heavy local anesthetic. The dentist will then drill into the tooth until the root canal is reached. Once this area is opened and the damaged root is exposed, the dentist will use special instruments to "pull" the pulp out of the canal. Once the pulp has been removed, the dentist will clean and enlarge the root canal system. A "false" root will be inserted into the tooth, and the hole will then be cleaned and sealed with a permanent filling.

How Is a Tooth Restored After Treatment?

Once your root canal is complete, your dentist will fill the hole and prepare the tooth for a false cap, or crown. In some cases, if multiple teeth were involved in the procedure, a bridge or joint crown may be used. Each patient's root canal is slightly different and the choice of tooth restoration methods largely depends on how much of the natural tooth is left, and how strong that tooth is after treatment.

Important Things to Know

A root canal and restoration are usually completed in two sessions. Immediately following a root canal treatment you can expect soreness and tenderness in the area, but this should not last more than a week. You must take proper care of your tooth following a root canal since it will still be susceptible to damage.
