WEST NYACK, N.Y. - July 30, 2018 - PRLog -- Steven R Green takes the reader back to archaic Greece, 600 BC, before Socrates, when tyrants ruled the city-states, the seeds of democracy were beginning to sprout, and poets were putting their words to paper (or papyrus). The poets could entertain or provide elegies; but their words could also make or break reputations and foment uprisings.
We meet Cleis, a fifteen-year-old girl from Athens. After she reluctantly participated in the traditional rites of passage, she is forced into an arranged marriage. But Cleis resists the confinement of a wife in Attica and escapes by jumping on a merchant's boat. He is no ordinary merchant; he's Charoxos, a brother of Sappho, the eminent Poetess from Lesbos. Sappho maintains a thiasos, or sanctuary, in honour of Aphrodite, the popular Goddess of Love. But Sappho's definition of Love is complex and multi-layered.
Cleis is not the only visitor to Sappho's sanctuary. Charoxos brings home Doricha, a priestess from Egypt, who expands Sappho's spiritual, and sensual, consciousness. Aesop appears with his fables. We also meet Solon, an archon from Athens who is not pleased with the rigid code of law created by Draco. Sappho's "sparrows" entertain her guests with music and wisdom.
A path of intrigue takes the reader to a royal wedding in Mytilene (capital of Lesbos), and an assassination plot. A journey to Ephesus gets an escort of Amazons from the Black Sea. The tragic tyrant, Periander of Corinth, is described in all his genius and misery.
Mr. Green pulled together all the fragments about Sappho, her work, and her contemporaries, connected the dots, and has provided the reader with a memorable tale. When you finish the book, you'll realize you were not only entertained; you were enlightened about a distant period of time that has eerie resonance to our own.
