Will you come home with something more than a haircut next time you go to the salon? We don't want to nitpick but you may have to

The rise of pesticide resistant lice makes prevention of transmission all the more important. Public health inspectors pay visits to hair salons to test their Barbicide disinfectant which can kill lice nits found on combs and scissors but only if it is prepared properly. To make matters worse, a key tool in the public health inspectors' arsenal was recently discontinued making this task a lot tougher. Fortunately, there is now an alternative.

Quat Test Strips for Barbicide (Lice), Zebra Mussels, Phytophthora (fungus),
NEW YORK - April 23, 2018 - PRLog -- Barbicide is a specially formulated quat sanitizer designed to kill pathogens and lice eggs known as nits. The blue colored liquid and its iconic jar have been fixtures in hair salons for over 70 years. It is delivered as a concentrate that is then diluted to its effective range of 2500-4000ppm.

According to government statistics, there may be 6 to 12 million children infested by lice every year. With pediculicide (lice killing chemicals) resistant strains on the rise, treatment is ever more difficult. Prevention is the most effective way to stop transmission and one of the best places to do this is in hair salons.

Health inspectors rely on quat test strips to ensure the concentrate is not watered down too much. If diluted to below 2500ppm, Barbicide won't kill lice eggs that have been picked up on combs and scissors. Random testing also ensures that blue liquids such as Windex, windshield washing fluid or even blue food dye isn't used by unscrupulous hairdressers trying to save money. Such practices, albeit rare, put the general public at risk of lice infestation. Unfortunately, the quat test strips made by Barbicide were discontinued in 2017 leaving health inspectors with no ready alternative.

As chance would have it, Indigo Instruments had developed an extra high level quat test strip to help park conservation authorities stem the spread of zebra mussels, whirling disease, chytrid fungus and other invasive species.  The Indigo 10000ppm quat test strips overlap and extend the test range of the discontinued Barbicide strips. A health inspector in British Columbia public health unit confirmed in late 2017 that they work perfectly for this application.

Indigo brand quat test strips also have another distinct advantage not offered by most test strips on the market. They have an exceptionally fast response. They give immediate test results rather than requiring a one minute waiting period before they can be read. This ensures both accurate and prompt results.
