Slug-A-Bug's Core Values Shine after Irma

A Heart Warming Story of Community Service When Times Get Tough

MELBOURNE, Fla. - Nov. 20, 2017 - PRLog -- Slug-A-Bug of Brevard county lived out their core values during the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.  With the monstrous cleanup facing their customers; it was evident that the routine services they provide the community would not be top of mind.

Steve Lum, President, understood the impact that Irma created for the company, along with the additional stress it would have on all 50 plus employees. The inability to service customers, meant that their employees could have to endure financial instability. Lum turned to the five core values of the company and immediately enacted a solution. Slug-a-Bug's Core value number one, is; "Caring for our customers and co-workers like family." Core value number two, is: "Caring for our community and the environment". These values inspired Lum to donate several hundred man-hours to the community (giving employees an opportunity to help customers and residents, at no cost, and in return get reimbursed for the time they worked). The results were unexpected.

Two days after the company was able to open; management communicated to all employees Lum's program. It was immediately embraced and three hours later a network of materials, supplies, and information was being distributed throughout the company. Technicians were already on scene and helping people with debris removal. Tools and supplies were being provided through a network created by the employees. Incredibly, this all happened without any direction from the company. It was all orchestrated from and by the employees. The unexpected result became evident when the hours were accounted for along with the reimbursements to be paid. The result was hundreds of hours were logged in but only forty were processed for payment.

Steve Lum commented; "When you hold true to your core values, and instill those values into everyone that comes aboard, you may be surprised at what an impact it can have on your company." Lum explained further, "Our employees who had sick time and vacation time cashed it in, which was part of the plan, chipped in and worked for free, leaving the pool of hours open for those who really needed it." The end result was a deep understanding of the significance of core values and the impact that they have on everyone, even corporations.
