Current State Of Water Consumption In The UK
The consumption level of 150 litres is not sustainable in the long-term.
By: Pressure Coolers
According to an article published On Average, yearly the standard household uses about 1647 m3 per year, equaling a sturdy £400 per year. Considering that the UK has less rainfall per person that northern Europeans and London is actually dryer than Istanbul, the average UK household needs to start doing their bit to conserve this natural resource.
A couple figures for thought; taking baths is the biggest usage in most households and take up to 115 litres to fill. Showers use on average 50 litres per session, a washing machine consumes about 55 litres and a dish washer uses about 15 litres. Even flushing the toilet uses about 10 litres per flush, however, most modern toilets only use about 6 litres per flush. It's a huge sum of water used during a normal day's routine.
Two people in a household consume 276 litres a day, a family of four can consume up to 450 litres a day and larger families of seven are looking at 655 litres a day.
Waterwise is a NGO who are focused on decreasing water consumption in the UK and are a leading authority on water efficiency, "Waterwise doesn't want people to stop using water, we want people to stop wasting water. The key to water efficiency is reducing waste, not restricting use. About one third of the water each person uses on a daily basis is wasted"
The simplest things can help make a difference:
· Turn off your tap when you are brushing your teeth.
· Buy a water saving shower head.
· Invest in energy efficient washing machine and dish washer.
· Use dual flush systems.
· Don't make bathing a habit rather shower – but don't take too long.
· Only use your washing machine for full loads of washing.
· Instead of letting the shower water run down the drain while you wait for it to get warm, collect it in a bucket and use it for watering plants or handwashing clothes.
· Keep an eye out for water leaks.
